I’m not sure why I ever thought Holly could like me.

I’m a bit of an idiot. I’m tall, and not in a rakish way unless you mean I look like a rake. My name is Michael, but my nickname, Biv, comes from the least cool member of R&B supergroup Bel Biv DeVoe.

I know some stuff. What clothes are cool. What anything is cool. How to talk to a girl. How to talk to a girl when you’re trying to look cool and not like a dickhead.

I know Tougher Than Leather is the best hip-hop album in the world. That when ‘Run’s House’ hits, track one, you would have to be dead not to feel the rush.

I know Nike Air Force 180 High Pumps are the coolest shoes. My gran bought me them in Singapore as a surprise Christmas present. It was as if she was saying, You now officially have game, my darling grandson.

My shoes are cool because there are two points where you can inflate them: the high heel and the ankle, air rushing in. You turn a switch on the side, and you’re pumped up where you need it. I want a switch like that on me: a place where I can pump myself up so I’m ready to go. So that Holly goes, I like you, Biv. Come closer.

I know that at fifteen it’s ridiculous to be so juiced up on love. I blame Color Me Badd, and Boyz II Men, and En Vogue, and TLC.

You suck, R&B. All these tales of what it’s like to feel loved, but none on how you get it.

I ask my mum about love. She says the people who love you are there for you, period.

I love my mum, but she can be a bit of an idiot sometimes.
